The two definitions arose from discussions at the Architecture meeting of March 6, 2006.

## Comments on Perry's Definition

I think we need to establish what parts of this definition are essential to the DERM.

*A set of mathematical relationshipsbuilt on the index: algebra, geometry, Boolean operations, image processing, etc;

Image processing is an application built on top of the DERM, but it is not part of the DERM. The mathematical relationships that are fundamental to the DERM would be the relationships between indexes (parent-child, neighbour, distance, etc)

*A strategy for quantizing values, preferable integers, to each discrete cell.

Is the quantizing strategy a part of the DERM?
